ABOUT TERJE
I am a skilled photographer, having received my Norwegian craft certificate («svennebrev») after an apprenticeship of four years. In my professional career as photographer, I worked mainly with commercial and industrial photography as well as portraits.
For two and a half years, I also had the pleasure of being a guest lecturer of photography at Bergen’s academy of art and design (Statens høgskole for kunsthåndverk og design). As well as teaching at the academy’s four departments, I also handled the photographic presentation of the Master students’ final projects. This was a very rewarding period, which led me to gain a deeper insight and understanding of the artistry of photography.
I am, by nature, a collector. This trait is reflected in my photographic works, and in particular my works of the last 20 years. To a large extent, the picking and choosing of my objet trouvés (found objects) are as much a part of the artistic process and the emerging images as the actual taking of the photographs. I love the challenge and the process involved when working with conceptual artistic processes.
In 2009, I self-published my project «Trees». It felt good to see in book form a project that had been ongoing for 15 to 20 years. The whole process was a very interesting and educational experience comprising everything from editing and typographical design to choosing the right printing method, binding and distribution. The book is still available for ordering via e-mail (see info under «Contact»).
In 2015, I was commissioned by Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen to deliver artworks for the hospital. The images were required to reflect various themes – motivation, harmony, street scapes and provocation. The selection was made in collaboration with the hospital’s art committee, based on the intended room or department. A total of 46 large works were produced.
I am currently working on several large projects. Some of these feel mature enough to soon be ready for presentation, while others are still evolving.
Since the autumn of 2018, I have been teaching photography for advanced non-professional photographers. The workshops have focused on figurative language, composition, storytelling, projects and presentation, and have been run with a maximum of five participants.
My online galleries contain only a few photographs from each project, as a comprehensive collection would be too large. The full projects may be displayed as exhibitions and/or in book form. Feel free to get in touch should this be of interest.
Yours sincerely,
Terje Bergesen
